There's a Goodwill store about 2 miles from where we live, and it's literally a treasure trove for my husband. He finds many nice blazers in there for just ten bucks each. We've gone from dry cleaning them at home to jazzing them up. It was my husband's idea to add elbow patches- has comes up with the idea, and I figure out how to get it done. Here you'll see how we changed an ordinary wool blazer into a custom statement piece!
The
first step was finding wool, and finding it in the color he wanted. This
was an interesting step because I sent my husband on his own to the fabric
store to get it. When I was in college, I had to take an entire
course on fabrics, but it's a bit difficult to give somebody a crash
course on it via text message! He did good,
though. The lady at the fabric counter helped him out, and the fabric
he bought was of very good quality.
I began by making a pattern out of parchment paper.
The patches have two layers so they'll have a straight, seamless edge. I had to use the steam setting on the iron to crease them flat. Making sure the patches are aligned correctly, and are positioned in the same spot on each arm is very important.
It was kinda difficult sewing the patches on because of the arm on my machine, and the width of the sleeves. But I got it done!
And here's the finished product:
